EACC Hosts 2014 St. Francis County Spelling Bee

East Arkansas Community hosted the 2014 St. Francis County Spelling Bee on Friday, January 17th in the EACC Lecture Hall. Tiffany Billingsley, EACC Associate Vice President for Community and Business Outreach served as the event coordinator. EACC Librarian, Paige Laws, served as the pronouncer/facilitator and EACC instructors, Clyde Rodgers and Abbie Robinson, served as judges. The 2014 St. Francis County Spelling Bee winner was fourth grader Allen Coleman from Stewart Elementary School, who correctly spelled the word tycoon to capture the title. The Runner-Up was Matthew Hill (Palestine/Wheatley Middle School).
Students in the 4th through 8th grades from various county schools including Stewart Elementary School, Palestine Wheatley Elementary School, and Palestine Wheatley Junior High School participated in the competition to determine the top speller from the area. There were 15 students vying for the title. The winner is slated to compete at the Mid-South Spelling Bee to be held at the Al Chymia Shrine Center in Memphis. The final competition will be held at the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. The event was sponsored by the Continuing Education Department at EACC.
