Lisa Miller Named EACC’s Academic All-Star

Forrest City-East Arkansas Community College has announced Lisa Miller of Forrest City, Arkansas, as the winner of the 2013 Academic All-Star Scholarship award. Miller was recognized at the recent Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges annual conference in Hot Springs along with 21 other student scholarship winners from other the community colleges around the state.
The Academic All-Star Scholarship is designed to award excellence in academics and leadership at the community college level. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.25 and possess a minimum of 12 credit hours in pursuit of an associate degree. Each of the twenty-two community colleges in the Arkansas system grants one AATYC All-Star Scholarship to one student per year.
Miller is a currently a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at EACC, serves as an academic tutor for other students, and has participated in numerous experiential learning, leadership, and service activities. She has been awarded several academic achievement and outstanding tutor awards.
“I am impressed by Lisa’s determination in starting on the developmental level and working her way up to the challenging coursework she faces. Coming this far has not been easy, but she has demonstrated an enthusiastic spirit and academic excellence that makes her a true Academic All-Star,” states instructor Christy White. Miller is currently enrolled in EACC’s Nursing Program where she is on course to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing. She plans to continue her education to obtain a Master’s degree in Nursing.
Dr. Walter Bumphus, President and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges, and Shane Broadway, Director of Arkansas Department of Higher Education presented keynote addresses at the conference. In addition to the $500 award the All-Stars received, a second full-tuition scholarship was offered by 13 Arkansas four-year universities to aid the recipients in completing their bachelor’s degree. The announcement was made at a conference brunch honoring the students.
