East Arkansas Community hosted the 2012 St. Francis County Spelling Bee on Friday, January 27th in the EACC Lecture Hall. Lindsay Midkiff, EACC Director of Continuing Education served as the event coordinator. EACC Librarian, Paige Laws, served as the pronouncer/facilitator and EACC instructors, Clyde Rodgers and Heath Sanders, served as judges. The 2012 St. Francis County Spelling Bee winner was Kelsey Lewis (Palestine Wheatley Junior High School) who correctly spelled the word inflation to capture the title. The second place winner was Troy Jones (Palestine Wheatley Junior High School) and third place went to Azia Jackson (Forrest City Junior High School).
Students in the 4th through 8th grades from five schools around the county participated in the competition to determine the top speller from the area. There were 20 students vying for the title. The winner is slated to compete at the Mid-South Spelling Bee to be held at the University of Memphis. The final competition will be held at the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. The event was sponsored by the Continuing Education Department at EACC.
