Small Works on Paper: Retro Works Travels to Forrest City

East Arkansas Community College-Forrest City

A touring art exhibition, co-sponsored by the Arkansas Arts Council, arrives Monday, June 7, at the East Arkansas Community College Fine Arts Center Arts Center Gallery. Small Works on Paper: Retro Works will be on display through August 27 in the college’s Center for Fine and Performing Arts Gallery on 1700 Newcastle Road. Admission is free.

Daily hours for the Gallery will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Fridays from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or as scheduled for special group tours.

SWOP: Retro Works is a retrospective collection of 30 outstanding works created by Arkansas artists between 1989 and 1997. The works were previously featured in the annual Small Works on Paper touring exhibitions and were purchased with grants from the International Paper Foundation and donated to the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas. The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas partnered with the Arkansas Arts Council to curate SWOP: Retro Works, which will travel to various educational institutions, galleries and museums across Arkansas throughout the year.

The Small Works on Paper exhibition was created in the late 1980s to exhibit small works of art (no larger than 24x24 inches) by Arkansas artists in a traveling show to all areas of the state. In particular, it benefits rural communities that often lack access to galleries and museums.

As an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, the Arkansas Arts Council shares the goals of all its agencies, of preserving and enhancing the heritage of the state of Arkansas.

The other agencies are: Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, Historic Arkansas Museum, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center and the Old State House Museum. Funding for the Arkansas Arts Council and its programs is provided by the state of Arkansas and the National Endowment for the Arts.
