Abilities Requirement Policy
In order to achieve the nursing curriculum objectives, a student must be able to:
- Physically tolerate an 8-10 hour work day at a pace conducive to safe and effective nursing practice.
- Stand and/or walk for prolonged periods of time in a clinical setting.
- Walk up 2 flights of stairs and down 3 flights of stairs.
- Lift and transfer patients to accomplish bed to chair and chair to bed transfers.
- Apply up to 10 pounds of pressure to bleeding sites.
- Lift at least 50 pounds using appropriate body mechanics.
- Respond and react immediately to auditory instructions, requests, and/or monitor equipment.
- Accurately perform auditory auscultation.
- Perform close and distance visual activities involving objects, paperwork, people, as well as, discriminate depth and color perception.
- Discriminate between sharp/dull and hot/cold when using hands.
- Perform fine and gross motor movements with upper and lower extremities.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Make appropriate decisions quickly and under stressful situations.
- React in a calm and courteous manner when encountering hostile situations.
- Perform multiple tasks simultaneously in order of priority.
